United Way announces $330,000 goal for 2007

The United Way of Miami County is entering fifty years of service throughout the county as a means of community problem-solving through its funded agencies. This year’s campaign is more than a slogan – it’s what happens to each one of us when we contribute money or time to United Way.
United Way begins by asking our community “what’s important?’ and listening closely. Then we develop a thoughtful plan with measurable objectives. Next, they enlist help in generating necessary resources. They do the work by supporting effective programs, creating new ones where necessary and forging critical partnerships. They measure and report the results. The United Way operates on a volunteer-driven, well organized, and carefully monitored system. Each year, committees of volunteers carefully assess the community’s problems and establish priorities. The United Way system works to ensure that contributions are being used wisely.
The work has already begun. The 2007 campaign goal is set at $330,000, according to Debi Miser, United Way executive director. Last year’s goal was $325,000. The United Way achieved a feat they had never accomplished before last year. Officials with the United Way of Miami County closed the 2006 fundraising campaign on Dec. 22 – for the first time in the same year it was started. They also raised more money than ever before.
Chairman for this year’s United Way campaign will be Don Cates, president of AmericanTrust Federal Savings Bank. Cates has been involved in United Way campaigns since moving to Peru in 2000. Don states that "this year's campaign goal of $330,000 is less than the community's record campaign achieved last year it is still the highest goal ever. The Board of Directors felt it was important to take into consideration last year's successes but also continue to strive to do more to meet the many needs that are underserved. The campaign committee is confident and exciting about meeting the challenge of this year's goal".
Unit Chairs for the campaign will include Jim Yates, industrial; Mike Schaub & Denise Hamman-Yater, commercial; Dick Fullmer, Professional; Jim Tidd, government, Joann Orr, Professional Medical. This year’s Division Chairs for the campaign will include Debbie Huff, industrial division; Becky Wright, finance division, Lisa Stanfield, automotive; Bruce Embrey, attorneys; Melody Edwards, medical institutions; Becky Ousley, Kathy Brehmer & Claire Smith, non-medical & general business; Ann Hubbard, state; Ken Rowland & Kim Brown, county; Lori Holderman, city.
This year there is one new agency the United Way will be helping to fund its essential services – Food Finders Food Bank. The Lafayette organization services food pantries in 16 counties, including Miami County. The organization’s mission is to work to eliminate hunger in North Central Indiana by locating food and other nonfood items that might otherwise be wasted and redirect those items to nonprofit agencies that serve low-income Hoosiers. The other eleven United Way agencies for 2007 are; American Red Cross, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Dental Clinic, Family Intervention Center (Domestic Violence Shelter), Girl Scouts, Miami County Child Abuse Prevention, Miami PEERS Project, The Salvation Army, Wabash-Miami Home Health Care & Hospice, and YMCA.
There’s no better way in helping to make our community be a better place to live, than to help with the United Way. What they do, matter’s to all of us. The United Way believes in what matters as we focus on changing lives in our community. With your help, they can raise the quality of life for all.

Your United Way contribution is an investment in our community. Together we can get the results. Your gift will be invested in programs that provide; youth development, family/community wellness, crisis/emergency service and self-sufficiency.
If you would like to volunteer, contact the United Way office at 765-473-4240 or email Debi Miser at debim@uwmiamip.org
