It's a feat they've never accomplished before

It's a feat they've never accomplished before.
Officials with the United Way of Miami County closed the 2006 fundraising campaign on Dec. 22 ‹ for the first time in the same year it was started. The campaign is usually extended as late as March to allow time to get pledges turned in and meet goal.
They also raised more money than ever before ‹ $330,227, or 102 percent of the $325,000 goal ‹ which will go to deserving agencies that provide a myriad of essential services in Miami County.
"The difference in this year's campaign is that we did it in the same year we started the campaign," said Executive Director Debi Miser. " ... This is a credit to Don Cates, campaign chairman, and Jody Long, board president, and all the volunteers who worked so diligently all year to keep the United Way so successful."
"When the campaign set the lofty goal we knew it was going to take an extraordinary effort to achieve it and it was going to take individuals and companies to really step up and they really did," Cates said. "This record campaign can be celebrated by the entire community."
Miser said donations from employees at American Stationery and the Square D company matching employee donations were two other big attributions to this year's success.
"Without this we wouldn't even be close to where we are right now," she said.
"Thank you to all those who volunteered to work on the campaign and to all the businesses and individuals who gave this year to make our goal a reality," Long said.
And with a new year and new campaign fast approaching, Miser said she is always looking for new volunteers.
"If you can't give money, your time is just as valuable," she said.
Also, not-for-profit organizations seeking funds can pick up an agency application at the office in the Community Resource Center. The deadline for applications is Jan. 31, 2007.
