SERVICES: First Steps Indiana’s First Steps Early Intervention Services provides a system of early intervention for infants, toddlers and preschoolers with special needs. Early intervention involves parents, teachers, physicians, and therapists. Together this team develops a plan for each child that becomes the road map for the services the family and their young child will receive. Infants and toddlers, from birth to three yeas old with an identified disability are entitled to receive early intervention services. This includes children with speech and development delays, vision and hearing impairments, sensory integration problems, autism, chromosomal abnormalities or genetic disorders, and neurological disorders. Also included are infants and toddlers considered “biologically at risk” of disability. This includes children with very low birth weight, small for gestational age, asphyxia, complications before, during or following birth, and/or those children whose mothers’ had limited prenatal care or prenatal substance abuse.

Services that are available through First Steps include information and referral, special instruction, occupational, physical and speech therapy, social services, health services, family education and support, and home visits. All infants and toddlers are eligible for evaluation at no cost to the family to determine if they qualify to receive early intervention services.

Keys for Kids Preschool Keys for Kids provides developmentally appropriate programs for children from three to five yeas of age. The program provides activities to develop skills in the following areas: Cognitive (thing skills), gross motor skills (large muscle), fine motor skills (small muscle), socialization, self-help, affective (emotional development), expressive language and receptive language. Children do not need to be potty trained to attend Keys for Kids, and children with special needs are welcome.

Early Head Start Early Head Start is a free child development program that serves pregnant mothers, and children up to their third birthday. Each child who attends Early Head Start receives child development services and health services, and parents are involved in every aspect of the program. Ninety percent of the families with children in EHS must be at 100% of the poverty level; other families may then be admitted to the program. The EHS Prenatal Program is designed to help eligible pregnant women receive the medical care they and their growing babies need. A prenatal specialist works with mothers to provide information about pregnancy and childbirth, as well as caring for a new baby. The specialist also helps find medical and dental services, and items needed for new baby care.

Individual goals are planned and monitored daily. The supported living program offers supervised and independent living assistance for both adults and children. Guidance is individualized, may be as much as 24 hours a day care, and can be provided in the consumer’s own home.
