About 50 local volunteers showed their caring for their community Friday, September 13, 2013. Miami County United Way, Dukes Memorial Hospital, and Ivy Tech Community College coordinated a group to work at the Scratching Post, the Extending God's Grace (EGG) House and the Slavation Army through the Day of Caring.
"Once we announced the projects ... then they started volunteering. People want to voluteer in ways that kind of match their passions," said Theresa Murphy, special events coordinator and executive director of Ivy Tech Peru.
Murphy said the Scratching Post was a good choice becasue people have compassion for animals; the EGG house porvides home for families to stay after they have a house fire, which " pulls on people's heart strings"; and the Salvation Army is a well-known orgainzation that the community values. Volunteers came from Dukes, Ivy Tech, the United Way, Peru Community Schools, City of Peru, Hickory Creek at Peru, Miami County Child Abuse Prevention, the Scratching Post and the EGG House, said United Way Executive Director Debi Wallick.
